Varthana Finance is dedicated to empowering affordable private schools in India by providing essential financial support, helping them enhance and expand educational opportunities for students from low-income backgrounds. This Bengaluru-based Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) primarily serves small private schools that often lack access to traditional banking services but require funds to improve their infrastructure, such as expanding classrooms, upgrading laboratories, or purchasing school buses. 
 
The story behind Varthana’s creation traces back to its co-founder, Steve Hardgrave, an unlikely candidate to run an NBFC in India, having been born and raised in Southern California. Growing up in the U.S., Hardgrave viewed private education as expensive and inaccessible to most people, as public schools are government-funded and generally affordable for all students. However, his perspective changed during his tenure at Grey Ghost Ventures, an Atlanta-based impact investment firm, in 2007. While travelling to monitor microfinance investments, Hardgrave frequently spoke with women from low-income communities about their children's education. He was surprised to learn that many of them opted to send their children to private schools, even though they lived in poverty. 
 
These conversations planted the seed for what would later become Indian School Finance Company (ISFC) and eventually Varthana. Backed by Grey Ghost, Hardgrave initially founded ISFC in 2008 with the goal of providing small loans to affordable private schools. However, after some disagreements on the direction of ISFC, Hardgrave, along with Brajesh Mishra, a former colleague, decided to start their own venture. In 2012, they obtained their NBFC license and launched Varthana Finance. In March 2024, Varthana acquired ISFC’s school loan portfolio for Rs 126 crore, solidifying its position as a major player in financing affordable education. 
 
Varthana’s impact on the education landscape is significant. The company works with more than 11,000 schools across 14 states, primarily serving children whose parents are farmers, daily wage laborers, or auto-rickshaw drivers. These schools typically have been operating for about five years and cater to around 300-400 students. Many of them initially seek small, unsecured loans to make minor renovations or improvements, gradually growing with the help of Varthana’s continued support. 
 
By offering financial solutions to underserved schools, Varthana enables them to create better learning environments, ultimately improving the quality of education available to low-income students across India.
