Venture capital (VC) funding in Indian startups has shown a notable recovery in 2024, with fund inflows growing by almost 30% year-on-year in the first nine months, compared to the same period in 2023. This uptick signals a thaw in the funding winter that had slowed down the ecosystem, as investors become increasingly bullish on sectors like AI, fintech, deep tech, and sustainability. At 2024, a panel featuring Alok Goyal (Partner at Stellaris Venture Partners), Mandeep Julka (Vice President at Chiratae Ventures), and Bikram Mahajan (Partner at Unicorn India Ventures) discussed current investment trends, offering insights into securing venture capital and leveraging it for business growth. The discussion was moderated by Sandeep Sinha, Co-founder and Co-CEO of Oister Global. 
 
A key shift highlighted by the panelists is the move from "growth-at-all-costs" to a focus on profitability and sustainable business models. Mahajan noted that the earlier trend of "boom investing" has evolved. “It was all about going big or going home,” Mahajan quipped, adding that today, investing is centered around growth, retention, and unit economics—a trend he referred to as “greu” investing. He further elaborated that venture capitalists today focus on businesses with strong growth orientation and long-term durability, rather than just aggressive expansion. 
 
Mahajan also pointed out a change in the types of pitches VCs are seeing. Entrepreneurs are no longer just pitching single-product ideas; instead, they are presenting more comprehensive business strategies. She’s keen on opportunities in both the distribution and manufacturing sides and is keeping an eye out for licensed players in these areas. She also mentioned the increasing role of AI in wealth management, saying that a strong AI-driven startup in the wealth-tech space would catch her attention. 
 
Goyal shared his excitement about the future of application software, predicting that this space will undergo significant transformation in the next one to two decades. He believes that the distinction between software and services businesses will blur, leading to the emergence of startups that sit at the intersection of both fields. Additionally, Goyal anticipates that software development will become much more democratized, likening it to how typewriting evolved with the advent of PCs and word processors. "A decade from now, you and I might very well be software developers,” he said. 
 
Mahajan emphasized the importance of startups addressing large-scale global challenges with innovative tech solutions. He cited clean energy, climate change, public transit, and healthcare in India as key areas of interest. 
 
The panel also touched on the qualities VCs look for in a founding team. According to Julka, the team should have a deep understanding of both the domain and the technology they are working with. She stressed that understanding the business’s unit economics is crucial, as many startups struggle with this aspect despite having a good grasp of the market.

Founded by cousins Ruchika Agrawal and Nikita Agarwal, the company began as a support community for twin parents in June last year, before expanding into selling products by February. Currently, TwinsTribe offers 44 products, including detachable twin strollers that can convert into single strollers, twin bassinets that double as playpens, and activity logs for tracking feeding, diaper changes, and sleep schedules. 
 
As mompreneurs, Ruchika (a mother of twins) and Nikita founded TwinsTribe to address the lack of suitable products and resources for twin parents. Ruchika told "We were surprised by the limited options available,". Nikita, coming from a family of entrepreneurs, was immediately interested when Ruchika shared the idea, seeing a clear need and an opportunity to innovate in this space. Initially, the platform served as a community where twin parents could share their experiences and offer advice to others. The TwinsTribe blog, which attracts 5,000 monthly readers, features over 25 articles from the founders, Indian twin parents, doctors, and experts, covering topics like breastfeeding, hospital bag essentials, and NICU experiences. 
 
In addition to their blog, TwinsTribe also runs a WhatsApp support group for new twin parents, offering real-time help and advice. With twin pregnancies on the rise in India, Ruchika notes that changes in lifestyle and delayed pregnancies, along with increased fertility treatments, have led to more twin births. Studies show a global increase in twin birth rates, rising by a third since the 1980s, with about 1.6 million twin pairs born each year, equating to one in every 42 babies. "We see immense potential for growth and innovation in the twin-parenting space," says Ruchika, highlighting the increasing opportunities for the startup to expand its offerings.
